Spider-Man # 1 Review

Spider-Man # 1 Review
By Bryan Scheidler

I love Miles Morales. I feel like I need to say that up front so you know that I am biased when it comes to this character. I thought he was a great character when they first introduced him in the ‘Ultimates universe’, I love that he survived the smashing together of the two worlds, and I love that we get both him and Peter Parker in the new universe. So with all of that out of the way the question is for Miles is this, how does his first solo comic in the new universe work?

The answer to that is simply this, perfect. Spider-man’s stories have always been about balance. For Peter Parker it was finding the balance between his life and Spider-man and the same is true for Miles. This first issue does a great job of establishing who Miles is and where he currently finds himself in his struggle between being Spider-man and being Miles. If you know anything about the history of Spider-man than you know this is the core struggle, this is the challenge that defines him. Brian Michael Bendis, a veteran writer, understands this and does a fantastic job bringing the reader into this Struggle. Basically what I am trying to say is this feels like a spider-man comic at its very core. With out the words ever being written down this story still communicates that the Famous Spider-man motto is at the heart of this, “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility”.

No comic review is complete with out talking about the art and Sara Pichelli is killing it! This issue is beautiful and the art is as much a part of the story telling as the words are. Part of the beauty is the difference between the real world and Miles’ imagination. When he is remembering things in his head the art takes on a cartoony look. All the while the real world is drawn with an amazing amount of detail and depth. Sara Pichelli should definitely be added to your list of artists to watch for at Conventions.

All in all this is a great book. It is great for long time spider-man fans, but just as great for new fans looking to get into comics. I have already added this to my monthly subscription list and I recommend that you do the same.
