It’s Fall!!! What’s your Line-up?
by Jeremiah Oshiro
The NFL is in full swing, schools are back in session, and pumpkin spice lattes are back at Starbucks. You know what that means: all your favorite shows are back from summer hiatus and debuting new episodes! It also means that new programs have the chance to see the light of day. One of the shows debuting this Fall...
The Muppets: Premiered on Tuesday, September 22 and airs on ABC (check your local listings). The show brings back all your favorite Muppet characters including; Gonzo, Fozzie, Sam Eagle, Pepe, Electric Mayhem, everyone’s favorite hecklers Waldorf and Statler, and many more. For those of you too young to remember, the Muppets was originally produced by Jim Henson as a UK variety hour program, aired from 1971-1981. The shows had no connecting storyline and therefore, did not have a set chronological airing schedule. During it’s run, the show featured a bevy of guest stars, who famously did skits with various Muppet characters, much like a Muppet Saturday Night Live.
This time around, the Muppets has adopted a modern sitcom format, written in the half-script, part documentary style comparable to Modern Family, The Office, and Parks and Rec and primarily centers around the production of Miss Piggy’s late night talk show. Unsurprisingly, Kermit plays the role of executive producer and director, while the rest of the gang fills in as the production team. Much like the Late Show or the Tonight Show, “Late Night with Miss Piggy” features both celebrity interviews and musical guest performances. In the events leading up to showtime, the audience follows along as Kermit and crew attempt to catering to Miss Piggy’s outrageous demands, while still trying to put together that evening’s show. These “behind the scenes” interludes are paired with periodic cuts to candid character interviews that give a more personable feel to the Muppets than we’ve ever seen before.
To no great surprise, the buzz leading up to the series premier focused on yet another in a long string of Piggy-Kermit breakups. The pivotal difference being that our favorite frog is courting a new hog, a network marketing rep named Denise. For those who grew up with the Muppets, feelings of nostalgia might entice you to watch the show, but this new amphibian - pig love triangle might be the best reason to watch altogether. Nevertheless, the Muppets are back, better than ever, and it’s going to be AWESOME!
